Making a Permanent Mount

Carefully wipe the slide and cover glass clean, if needed. Label one end of the slide while its subject is fresh in your mind. Make sure your specimen is thoroughly dry. Look in a good microscopy text to see how to dry out a specimen with alcohol. Place a drop of gum media, Canada balsam or transparent adhesive on the slide, then carefully placing the dried specimen on adhesive droplet. Place another small droplet of your chosen adhesive on the specimen, then gently cover it with a cover glass. Gently press down on the cover glass, if needed, to flow the adhesive to its edges. Lay the slide flat, face up, in a warm dry place to dry for a few days. Keep your slide out of extreme heat or the adhesive may melt and flow.
